4-H conducts a variety of programs in Bradley County but one that many history buffs look forward to is the 4-H History Fair that has been held every May since 2006.

“This program promotes citizenship in the community and connects the past with the present,” said Kathryn Ervin, 4-H program assistant.

“It also helps teachers meet state educational standards and brings together youth, sponsors, and community members.”

Ervin began the program in 2006 with the goal of reinforcing history for young people.

“A lot of times things that have happened in the past come back to happen again. I want 4-H members to know about history and understand how it has shaped us as a nation and a state.”

During the History Fair, youth participants research a topic and complete an exhibit board and portfolio.

The theme for the 2012 event for sixth- and seventh-graders is “Tennessee: History that Made a Difference.”

The theme for grades eight through 10 is always “Tennessee: The Civil War.”

Exhibits and portfolios may be completed as a team or individual for anyone in grades six through 10.

Winners of the History Fair exhibits win $50 (first place), $25 (second place), and $15 (third place). A number of sponsors also award Creative Awards.

The History Fair will be held May 4 through 6 at the Bradley Square Mall in Cleveland. Check-in of exhibits will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday and the competition will take place on Saturday.

Winners will be contacted in order to attend the awards ceremony at 2 p.m. on May 6.

Projects will be taken down on Sunday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

History Bowl will also be held for fourth- and fifth-graders on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. The competition will be a Jeopardy-style quiz game for a team of four members. Winning team members win ribbons and $10 each.

Sponsors are still needed.
