Lee University’s IOTA Epsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda gathered on Thursday, April 19, in the John Nichols Room of the Lee University Chapel to induct eleven new members.

Students inducted this year are seniors Knar Abrahamyan, Emily Fawcett, Shana Hakanson, Caitlin Hammon (in absentia), Lamprini Lindeman, and Sara Rosemann (in absentia); and junior Sara Baker. New inductees from the School of Music faculty include Ning An, Brad Moffett (in absentia), Austin Patty, and Randy Sheeks (in absentia). Pi Kappa Lambda is a National Music Honor Society “dedicated by its founders to the fostering of scholarly interest in the theoretical and historical aspects of music, and to the pursuit of eminent achievement in performance, composition, music education and research” in institutions of higher learning that offer music degree programs.

This objective is achieved in part by selection and recognition of juniors, seniors, graduate students, and faculty who have demonstrated superior achievement in a program of music instruction offered by the institution.

The society annually invites to membership those individuals regarded to be outstanding in both musicianship and scholarly achievement, taking into consideration the application of the individuals’ talents to the interests of their schools. Student membership is selected from the top twenty percent of the senior class and the top ten percent of the junior class. Faculty members come from those who have taught a minimum of two years.

Lee University’s chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda was established on April 10, 2001, and has since grown to a current membership of 161.

Of all the honor societies recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies, Pi Kappa Lambda is one of the oldest. The course of the organization has been one of continuing expansion and has more than 205 active chapters on as many college campuses. In its more than 94-year history, it has taken approximately 64,500 musicians into membership.
