An inmate at the Bradley County Jail was found unresponsive in his jail cell Sunday and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is aiding in an inquiry into Ronnie Dale Helton’s death.

@:According to Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, corrections officers discovered Helton, 58, shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Helton was transported to SkyRidge Medical Center by Bradley County Emergency Medical Service “following an unsuccessful attempt to revive him,” Gault said.

Sheriff Jim Ruth said Monday evening that Helton suffered from medical issues.

TBI Information Officer Kristen Helm confirmed Monday that TBI was notified of the death.

“We got called Sunday morning and we are waiting for an autopsy,” Helm said.

Helm also noted that Helton’s death was possibly due to natural causes.

“That is our protocol,” said Ruth regarding the TBI involvement.

“Anytime we have something involving law enforcement or the jail, we contact the TBI to look into it,” he added.

According to Gault, “Jail records indicated Helton was incarcerated Feb. 2 on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and indecent exposure.”

Helton was being held on $10,000 bond.
