Bishop Ellis William Hollifield, 88, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, April 28, 2012, at his home.

A native of Buncombe County, N.C., he was the former operations director of the Church of God International Offices in Cleveland.

He was also a former chaplain with the Asheville (N.C.) Police Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in World War II, and was a former pilot with the North Carolina Civil Air Patrol.

He was the son of the late Daniel Wilson Hollifield and Edith Brown Hollifield. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Lee Snipes Hollifield; son, Larry William Hollifield; grandson, Rodney Hollifield; and sisters: Nina Wyatt and Dorothy Foxx.

He is survived by his wife, Betty D. Yates Hollifield; daughters: Linda Hipps of Asheville and Sandra Lee Wargel of Stringer, Miss.; son, the Rev. Charles B. Hollifield of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special friend and caregiver, Russell Fender.

The funeral was held today, May 1, 2012, at West Asheville Church of God with the Revs. Larry Hollifield Jr., Aaron Hollifield and Charles Hollifield officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Roger Lunsford and Pastor Kevin D. Chapman officiating.

The Anders-Rice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The family issued appreciation to the Asheville VA Homebound Health Providers.
