The students of Cleveland City Ballet will literally “take to the air” this week as they present their spring concert “Le Cirque.” The production is a combination of traditional circus music and the newer compositions from the Cirque De Soliel shows. All of the elements of circus lore and circus traditions will be presented throughout the evening.

One of the highlights of the production and one of the “Cirque De Soliel” elements will be the Advanced Ballet students presenting an aerial dance. These students have been training throughout the spring with Amy Powell of Chattanooga Aerials, and they have conquered work on the “silks” and on the trapeze.

Monica Ellison, choreographer for the Advanced Ballet students has woven together traditional ballet with the exciting aerial work to create a unique moment for this concert. According to Artistic Director Connie Gatlin, “We love challenges, and weaving this aerial work into our traditional ballet classes has been just that! But we’re excited and ready to share this surprising element with our families and friends.”

Traditional calliope music will also play a part in the evening, as well as specialty numbers such as “Baby Elephant Walk” and “Make ’em Laugh.” In addition to Ellison, other instructors and choreographers are Ashley Witzel, Arlynne Van Hook, Deborah Lutz, Arianna Grey and Tiffany Mitchell.

The production will be held in the Dixon Theatre on the Lee University campus on Thursday and May 10 and11. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Dixon Theatre during evening rehearsal hours this week. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
