Virgil Allen Knight, 69, a resident of Cleveland, passed away at his home on Monday, May 14, 2012.

He was a lifelong resident of Cleveland, having been born on May 17, 1942, a son of the late Fred and Lela Mae Knight.

He was of the Baptist faith and attended Following in the Footstep Baptist Church.

He was retired from the Duracell Corporation after 29 years of service.

He loved gospel music and was an avid sports fan. He played softball and basketball on local teams for many years. He will however be most remembered for being a loving husband, father and the title he cherished the most, “Papaw,” from his five grandchildren he adored. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Bobbie Helton.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of almost 38 years, Shirley Knight; one son, Brent Knight and wife, Tonya, of Chickamauga, Ga.; one daughter, Leah Wallin and husband Chad, of Ringgold, Ga.; four sisters: Betty Kincaid, Shirley Williams, Mary Hunsucker, and Dot Whaley, all of Cleveland; five grandchildren: Zane Knight, Dawson Knight, Ethan Knight, Lessley Knight, and Logan Wallin; and several extended family members and friends.

The funeral is planned for Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church of Cohutta, Ga., 557 Hopewell Road, Cohutta, GA 30710 with the Rev. Nick Bivens officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at the Hopewell Baptist Church of Cohutta, and also on Thursday from noon until the 2 p.m. service time.
