River Bates, 3, died at SkyRidge Medical Center after emergency workers responded Thursday to a 911 call regarding him and his brother, Leland Bates, 5. Leland remains in critical condition after being airlifted to Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.
Bradley County Emergency Medical Service received the call at approximately 2:44 p.m. According to Bob Gault, media and public relations coordinator for the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, the caller claimed the children had been involved in a possible drowning.
River was reportedly not responsive, so EMS began CPR. Leland was unresponsive with a pulse. Life Force’s air medical unit was contacted and landed in a nearby field. Leland was airlifted to Erlanger and River was taken to SkyRidge where he was later pronounced dead.
According to reports, the children’s mother, Tasha Moses, drove several miles from her residence at 879 Keith Valley Road to her father’s residence at 851 Armstrong Road for a phone. Moses reported a near-drowning, but investigators could not find a pool or pond at either location. Deputies from the Sheriff’s office were sent out to both locations.
Gault said the Sheriff’s Office is continuning its investigation as to the cause of death. An autopsy on River will be conducted in an effort to determine the cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing by the Criminal Investigations Division, officials said.
