A suspected lightning strike Monday night shut down the Cleveland Utilities substation on Lang Street leaving 3,443 area residents without electric power for about 40 minutes, according to Bart Borden, vice president of the CU Electric Division.

The shutdown occurred at 9:50 p.m. and CU crews had power restored by 10:30 p.m. Loss of the Lang Street Substation affected areas in the city’s northeast and northwest quadrants, including neighborhoods on North Ocoee Street, Bowman Hills, Weeks Drive, a portion of Blythe Ferry Road, a section of 20th Street N.E., Fulbright Road, Barney Lane, a portion of Benton Pike, Lang Street, Sixth Street N.E., Chambliss Avenue and Jordan Avenue.

At about 9:46 p.m., a large tree fell across power lines at Linden Avenue and Fourth Street, creating a short power loss in the Inman Street area east of the railroad tracks, as well as in some of the downtown area, Borden said.

The CU official said Monday night’s lightning storm was severe, but did not include significant rainfall in most areas of the city.
