The Bears were scheduled to go head-to-head with Chattanooga Central in seven-on-seven competition Tuesday, but strong afternoon thunderstorms forced a postponement until 6 p.m. tonight.
“We canceled it because the field is just so wet and we didn’t want to mess it up. So we postponed it until tomorrow,” Floyd said.
The second day of Bears’ practice also saw the team looking sharp while running receiving, quarterback and other offensive drills. Floyd said the cancellation of Tuesday’s scrimmage gave the team an extra day to install what would have been introduced Wednesday.
“It (rain) doesn’t change the plans a whole lot. Yesterday was the first day of installing some passing plays,” Floyd acknowledged. “We will just continue on our plan of what we we’re going to put in Wednesday and just move it up a day and rotate Tuesday and Wednesday with the seven-on-seven and practice.”
The Bears’ staff are also dealing with typical first of the season re-introductions and other typical and routine situations that pop up with equipment and personnel.
“(There has been) a lot of stuff you don’t count on equipment-wise that you are handing out and a lot of people showing up you haven’t seen all summer and that kind of thing,” said the coach.
“I guess everybody is dealing with the same thing right now, just starting on the fundamentals again.”
New faces and helmets that don’t fit aside, Floyd said the Bears are ready to be back on the practice field.
“I think they are (excited). If you are not excited right now you don’t need to be playing,” he said.
Although the Bears were ready to get back to action Tuesday and disappointed Tuesday’s session was rained out, they will have the chance to see what they have learned during summer sessions against the Purple Pounders tonight.
“They definitely wanted to play. I had probably 100 texts coming in when it was raining asking if we were still going or not. The guys want to compete, that is for sure,” said Floyd.
