Its business is manufacturing all-steel roofing, as well as both steel and vinyl siding.
“It’s a very solid company with a good reputation of delivering excellent material at a great price,” said Nathan Libbey, vice president of Best Buy Metals. And Libbey is proud of the expertise of his employees because they specialize mainly in this specific field. “Steel metal roofing is our main business ... It’s our focus.”
Isaac Libbey is the owner, but several of the other 11 Libbey children help their brother run the family business.
Working in construction since he was 16, Isaac Libbey used many of the roofing products available and became familiar with how these products held up and which ones worked the best.
“In fact, most of the family is in the construction industry,” Nathan Libbey said.
Not only does Best Buy Metals sell in Southeastern Tennessee and Northern Georgia, it sells its product across the country, as well as the rest of the world through its online presence. Roughly 60 percent of its clients are contractors and 40 percent are individual homeowners. The company provides in-store training to individuals in the form of booklets, videos and installing technicians to answer questions.
“We offer a full 40-year guarantee for our metal roofing, which historically will last much longer than that,” Nathan Libbey said. A typical shingle roof only lasts about 10 to 18 years on average, in comparison. Metal roofing, however, traditionally has cost roughly twice as much as shingles in the past. But that’s where Best Buy Metals can help reduce the costs because customers can buy directly from the manufacturer without going through a wholesaler or retailer to raise the final cost. The cost of oil, used in the production of shingles, also has gone up, but much more than the cost of steel. “We make it right here in our production facility. And it’s stronger and longer-lasting, as well as Energy Star rated ... Having an Energy Star rating is a big difference.”
The steel roofing material that Best Buy Metals produces has a ceramic paint coating which is at minimum 25 percent reflective. Shingles, on the other hand, according to Nathan Libbey, absorb heat. Steel roofing is wind resistant, has a Class A fire rating, which means this type of roofing will not support a flame, and also is much stronger than shingles. Homeowners have gotten breaks on their insurance premiums because they installed a steel roof, Nathan Libbey said.
The additional benefits of steel is that it won’t crack and yet is stylish. Spanish tile has been the perennial favorite style nationwide, along with the Tuff-Rib, which is a three-foot wide panel, as well as the most economical. Best Buy Metals carries 18 different colors in 20 different designs, so Nathan Libbey is sure customers can find the right color and design to match their existing decor.
“Fifteen years ago, the technology didn’t exist to reflect heat,” Nathan Libbey said. “Today, this technology can keep your attic 20 to 60 degrees cooler, resulting in lower cooling bills.”
Plus, at Best Buy Metals, everything is customized to the exact fit needed.
“Cut to the inch,” Nathan Libbey said. “And same day or next day delivery. In fact, 98 percent of the time, it’s produced the same day. This allows us to have great customer service.”
And the quantity isn’t a factor. Whether a customer orders one piece of roofing or siding or 100, the cost per foot is the same.
“We don’t charge customers a small order fee,” Nathan Libbey said. “We’d rather just offer a competitive price up front.”
