An automobile crash inside the city limits early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 46-year-old woman and injured her passenger.

Holli Hough of Cleveland was killed and James Hughes III, 34, was injured after colliding with a Ford van reportedly driven by a man who had failed to stop earlier for police.

The crash was reported just after 3 a.m. Saturday.

Dennis Orlando Cruz, 24, of Sugar Hill, Ga., has been booked at the Bradley County Jail on vehicular homicide and criminal simulation, according to jail records.

Tennessee Highway Patrol is continuing the investigation, according to Evie West of the Cleveland Police Department.

According to reports, Cruz was traveling west on Inman Street when CPD officer Bobby Ruth attempted a traffic stop. West said the driver of the van took off at a high rate of speed and Ruth lost contact after the driver failed to yield to the officer’s emergency equipment.

A short time later, Cruz’s vehicle reportedly crossed the center line while traveling at a high rate of speed north on Georgetown Road and collided with Hough’s car, according to THP trooper Travis Ryans’ initial crash report.

West said the crash occurred just north of the 20th Street and Georgetown Road intersection.

Ryans’ report also indicated Cruz had allegedly been drinking alcohol prior to the crash.

Neither driver nor the passenger inside Hough’s car was wearing seat belts, according to the report.

Hough became Bradley County’s 10th traffic fatality in 2012.
