OOLTEWAH — Just as the U.S. Olympic squad was guaranteed a gold medal in beach volleyball with both participants in the finals being from here, Cleveland High had the same situation Thursday at The Honors Course.

It was an all Blue Raider final in the championship match of the Chattanooga District Golf Association Junior Classic as teammates Conner Caprara and Carson Griffin squared off for the Boys 16-18 Masters title. Caprara got the better of his teammate with a 5 and 3 match victory to claim the championship trophy.

The pair had qualified for the event as two of the top four golfers during the summer CDGA season and dispensed with Georgia opponents in Wednesday’s opening round to set up and all-Cleveland conflict for the crown. Caprara qualified third for the event and defeated second-seeded John Blevins 1 up in the semifinals, while Griffin was the No. 4 seed and knocked off top-seeded Chase Cole 4 and 3 on Wednesday.

Having been evenly matched in the first two high school matches of the new TSSAA season, the duo has led the Blue Raiders to three straight victories to open the fall campaign.

Caprara, a junior, took low-medalist honors in the season opener against Polk County with a 2-over 38, but Griffin, a senior, had the best score with a 3-over 39 in a District 5-AAA tri-match earlier this week. Caprara shot 41 in the Tuesday match against Bradley Central and Soddy-Daisy, while Griffin carded a 40 against the boys from Benton, giving both players a 79 total in the first 18 holes of the new season.

Caprara, who was played The Honors for the first time in Wednesday’s semifinals, gave much of the credit to his friend Cody Godfrey, who served as his caddie for the event. Godfrey, a former Walker Valley and current Tennessee Wesleyan golfer, who won the Chattanooga Men’s Metro last month, works as a regular caddie at the The Honors and was able to give Caprara some valuable insight.

Caprara and Griffin will join forces for the Blue Raiders again on Monday when they resume the TSSAA season when Cleveland makes a trip to Dayton Country Club to face Rhea County.

The boys weren’t the only CHS golfers in the end of season CDGA event as Lady Raider sophomore Heidi Barringer was the top qualifier in the Girls 15-18 division.

Barringer was the top seed in the Girls 15-18 division, but was upset 3 and 2 by fourth-seeded Rachel Rebne, who in turn fell in the final to Natalie Javadi by a 4 and 3 score Thursday.

Correction

On Tuesday when Polk County traveled to Copper Basin, sophomore Lauren Passmore shot a 46 to help the Lady Wildcats to a 19-stroke victory.
