Joseph David Martin, 90, a longtime resident of Bradley County, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, in a local hospital.

He was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a decorated veteran of World War II. He retired from the National Guard after serving more than 30 years.

He was a longtime member of the VFW in Athens. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Messer Martin; parents, John C. Martin and Ella M. Earley Martin; son, Stan Martin; and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include his daughters: Rhonda Smith and husband, Eddie, of Cleveland; and Vicki Becker and husband, Don, of Spring City; son, Jerry Martin of Cleveland; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Blanche Parris and husband, Preston, of Cleveland.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Elders John E. Robbins and John Wiley Robbins officiating.

Interment will follow in the Candies Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
