George Clifford Hughes, 74, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Sunday night, Aug. 26, 2012, in a Chattanooga health care facility.

He was born in La Follette on June 28, 1938, a son of the late Jake and Maggie Hughes.

He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Elkmont Baptist Church.

His hobbies include hunting, fishing, camping and anything else associated with the great outdoors. He also enjoyed spending time talking with his brother-in-law, Dee, about the “Good Ole Days.”

With his heart of gold he never met a stranger. He will be forever remembered for the way he loved and cherished his family. The title he held most proudly was that of “Papaw” by the three great-grandchildren he adored.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 53 years, Florence Powell Hughes; son, George Curtis Hughes; sisters: Sarah Brown of Birchwood, Bertie Fisher of Cleveland and Francis Newbey of Hamilton County; brothers: Jacob Hughes of Ohio and Jimmy Hughes of Hamilton County: grandchildren: Chrissy Hughes Teague, Jacqueline Hughes, and Samantha Hughes, all of Cleveland; great-grandchildren: Brinley Hughes, Anna Teague, and Jacob Teague; brother-in-law, Dee and Faye Roberts; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.

A graveside service is planned for Friday morning, Aug. 31, 2012, on the family property, 510 Beaty Drive N.W., with the Rev. Johnny Hood officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Companion Funeral & Cremation Service.
