The Lady Mustang JV squad won its opening game by a 25-4 tally before Ashlyn Flock served up 25 straight winners as the hosts blanked the Tribe junior varsity in the final game.
When varsity play began, the girls from Athens scored the first two points but that would be their only lead of the night as Walker Valley claimed a 25-9, 25-8, 25-12 sweep.
Now 9-13 on the season and 2-2 in the district, the Lady Mustangs, who advanced to Gold Bracket play at the Choo Choo Classic over the weekend, will now get ready to take a little break before traveling to Cleveland High on Sept. 11 for their next match.
After falling behind 2-0, Walker Valley scored the next four points, including a kill by Autumn Sizemore, an ace from Eryn Walker and a double block from Bristol Snider and Sizemore to take the lead for good.
With the hosts building 11-3 and 17-4 advantages, McMinn showed a little life with a 5-0 run, before Baylee Boen took back the serve with a kill and Christian Whittemore stepped to the back line and served the final seven points of the game, including a trio of aces.
After the teams traded the first two points of the second game, Walker Valley went back to a full gallop with 12-1 run. After a 5-1 spurt from the Lady Cherokees, Whittemore once again served up seven straight winners, with three more aces as the “fillies” closed out the second game by scoring 11 of the final dozen points.
The final game of the evening was more of the same with the Lady Mustangs scoring the first four points before using a 13-3 run to seal the deal.
McMinn County did show a short spark with a 5-2 run to reach double figures the only time of the night, but the hosts closed the match with a 6-2 run for the 13-point outcome.
Snider led the varsity victory with 10 kills, a half dozen assists, six digs and a trio of blocks. Abby Campbell handed out 14 assists and had three digs, while Taylor Pruett collected nine digs and eight receptions.
Walker garnered nine digs, three aces and a trio of receptions in the victory, with Boen blasting nine kills. Alex Rominger collected eight digs and a pair of aces, while Rachel Lawhorn had a half dozen kills and a pair of blocks.
Whittemore had seven aces in her 19 service points.
In the junior varsity match, Flock led the way with nine aces, nine digs, a half dozen assists and four kills.
Abbi Mason dug out a half dozen shots, plus served up five aces, while Kaitlin Scoggins garnered four kills and three digs. Alexan Crittenden dished out four assists and belted three aces.
Sara Wilson added four digs, with Madison Russo downing a trio of kills.
Over the weekend at the Choo Choo Classic, Walker Valley won its pool play with victories over Boyd Buchanan (25-22, 25-20), Farragut (25-14, 19-25, 15-12) and Silverdale Baptist Academy (27-25, 25-20).
Advancing to the Top 6, the Lady Mustangs found the Saturday play much tougher, falling to Sullivan South (28-26, 10-25, 6-15), Dobyns-Bennett (21-25, 18-25), Blessed Trinity (18-25, 16-25) and Baylor (18-25, 21-25).
In the seven matches, Taylor Pruett had 89 digs, 85 receptions and three aces, while Snider helped out with 53 assists, 51 digs, 49 kills, 11 receptions, three aces and a trio of blocks.
Campbell collected 52 assists, 20 digs and nine aces, with Walker posting 38 receptions and 33 digs. Boen tallied 24 kills and 15 digs, as Sizemore downed 28 kills, a half dozen digs, five aces and three blocks.
Madison Pruett returned to the Lady Mustang lineup with 15 digs, 14 kills and a half dozen receptions, while Lawhorn blasted 23 kills and had five blocks.
