James S. Wefel, 65, of Iowa City, Iowa, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.

The family hosted a celebration of his life at their home, 926 Estron St. in Iowa City on Wednesday evening, Sept. 5, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be directed to The James S. Wefel Memorial Fund, in care of the U of I Foundation, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52244-4550.

He was born March 10, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Paul S. and Hilda A. (Unger) Wefel. He was professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Division of Cardiology, director of the Dows Institute for Dental Research, and administrative director of the Office of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

Survivors include his wife, Jan, of Iowa City; two sons: Jeff (Kelie) Wefel and their son, Gavin of Houston, and Jay (Kara) Wefel and their daughter, Sophia, of Denver; two brothers: John (Sandra) Wefel of Baton Rouge, La., and Peter (Molly) Wefel of Columbus, Ohio; and two nephews: Paul and Mark.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City was in charge of arrangements.
