A 21 year-old Alabama student reportedly drowned during a college outing weekend in Polk County.

Bradley County Fire Rescue officials were first placed on standby for a Polk County dive operation, then were asked to respond emergency after a reported drowning in Horn’s Creek.

According to 911 reports, BCFR divers were enroute to the area, then canceled after members of the victim’s group recovered him from the water.

West Polk County Fire Rescue Captain Matt Price said the victim, who was from Haiti, was a member of a group of students from Jacksonville State University in Alabama.

Price said the young man was in the water for approximately 17 minutes.

The drowning occurred when a canoe overturned, spilling the victim into the water.

A 911 call was made just before 3:30 p.m.

Price was first on the scene and requested BCFR’s Dive Team to assist.

After the victim was recovered from the water, he was taken to SkyRidge Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.
