Suspect arrested in Meigs homicide

Meigs County officials have made an arrest in a homicide which occurred this weekend at a Burkett’s Chapel Road residence.

According to information provided by the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Smith, 25, was arrested after allegedly shooting Nathan Whitener, 24.

An argument between the two men reportedly led to the shooting.

According to Meigs officials, they responded to Whitener’s residence after the shooting was reported at 10 p.m. Saturday.

“The argument escalated into a shooting, resulting in the death of Whitener. At this time, investigation is ongoing,” according to officials.

Smith was charged with second-degree murder and is being held at the Meigs County Jail under $100,000 bond.

His arraignment is set for Tuesday.
