The lone item was a rezoning request to change a piece of land near the intersection of Hopewell Place and Georgetown Road from Rural Residential to General Commercial. Right now, the land is not being used for anything. If the request is approved, owner Martin Fox plans to use the land to sell storage buildings.
County Planner Corey Divel said rumors that the land would be used for mini-warehouse storage were incorrect.
The Planning Commission is recommending that the County Commission deny the request.
During the meeting, newly elected 4th District Commissioner Charlotte Peak-Jones presented an issue a voter had brought to her attention about handicapped accessibility to the polling place at Michigan Avenue Elementary. Peak-Jones said she had looked into the issue, but has since realized the school was not in her district.
The resident had pointed out that the new sidewalk poured in front of the gym entrance did not meet the ADA standards for accessibility.
“According to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines an entrance also has to be noted as an emergency exit,” Peak-Jones said.
The lack of a ramp near the door makes the gym entrance not in compliance with this guideline.
She said ADA regulations also require that the slope of the sidewalk from a handicap ramp be no more than an inch. The slope of the sidewalk from the handicapped ramp near the front of the school toward the gym entrance is 2 to 3 inches in one place.
A handicapped-accessible ramp had been right in front of the old gym entrance, before the gym was destroyed in the April 2011 tornadoes. When the designs were made for the new gym, a ramp was not included. Since talking with the resident, Peak-Jones has been in contact with County Inspector Don Wyatt. Wyatt spoke with Bradley County Schools maintenance supervisor Larry Holcomb, who has said the issue will be taken care of.
The Commission also added an updated list of committee appointments to the consent agenda.
