Three Lee Lady Flames walked away with player of the week honors when the awards were passed out by the SSAC Monday evening. Leah Fortune and Kim Conrad took women’s soccer awards and Paula Martins garnered the volleyball accolades.
Fortune, a junior midfielder from Chicago, was named the conference offensive player of the week for the second week in a row. She helped the second-ranked Lady Flames post key shutouts over Spring Hill (4-0) and Mobile (2-0).
Fortune netted two goals against Spring Hill and one goal, the game-winner, against Mobile. For the season, Lee’s field leader has a team-leading six goals and one assists.
Conrad, a senior defender from Murfreesboro, is listed as the conference defensive player of the week. Conrad’s was a key reason coach Matt Yelton’s club opened SSAC play with two SSAC wins. Against Spring Hill she helped with the organization of Lee’s defense that limited the visiting Badgers to only four shots the entire match.
However, it was in the tight battle with Mobile that Conrad grabbed the spotlight. With the Lady Flames on top 1-0, Conrad chased down a Ram attacker after she had beaten Lee’s keeper, clearing the ball away from an almost certain tying goal. She was a part of a solid Lady Flames defense that limited Mobile to only two shots on goal.
Lee will take a 5-1 mark on the road this weekend, testing William Carey on Friday in Hattiesburg, Miss., and then moving on to Jackson, Miss., on Saturday to challenge Belhaven.
Martins was presented the volleyball award for the second time this season. The junior middle blocker from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil stepped up to pace the Lady Flames to SSAC wins over Truett McConnell (3-0), Southern Wesleyan (3-1) and Emmanuel (3-1).
The Lady Flames are 12-6 overall and ranked No. 5 by the NAIA. This past week Martins registered 35 kills, 14 digs, three aces and 10 blocks. She owned a remarkable .520 hitting percentage and for the season has 181 kills in 300 attempts (.400 percentage).
Lee travels to Atlanta for a rugged matched against NCAA Division III Emory University (15-2) tonight at 7.
