They needed the ramp to enter and exit their home.
Helping Hands at Broad Street UMC was begun some two years ago as part of the outreach mission of the church.
Dr. Bill Johnson heads up this group. It began with referrals from home health agencies. Now a call to Broad Street UMC will get a referral and a visit to see if your project is a match for workers.
If so, a date is set for the work to be done, a team is formed from church volunteers and the project is completed.
If the family is able to pay something toward the project, they are asked to mail the check to Broad Street UMC. If they are not able to contribute, the project is done for them.
Projects have ranged from reworking a bathroom — new floor and all, rebuilding a room on the back of the house, some roof repairs, numerous wheelchair ramps and other odd jobs. The team is working with Habitat Saturday on needed projects.
