Sixth-ranked Lee rallies for five-set volleyball victory

Ranked sixth in the latest NAIA poll, the Lee University volleyball team survived a tough five-set Southern States Athletic Conference battle Friday evening at Walker Arena.

The Lady Flames claimed the 3-2 victory over the visiting Brenau University Golden Tigers by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 28-30, 25-17, 15-9.

With the victory the Lady Flames move to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in SSAC play, while the loss drops the Golden Tigers to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Lee was guided by junior Irene Ojukwu and freshman Nicole Sumida. Ojukwu, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Sao Paulo, Brazil, posted a double-double, registering 17 kills to go along with 10 digs. Hixson native Sumida, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter and middle blocker who played at Baylor, lead the team with18 kills and finished with a .438 attack percentage.

Former Ooltewah standout Libby Peigen managed 20 digs on the evening for the Lady Flames while Camil Martinez, of the Dominican Republic, set the table for her teammates with 53 assists.

Brazilian Paula Martins added 10 kills of her own to give the host club three players with double-figure kills. Dallas native Rachael Cunningham helped complete the victory with eight timely kills and eight digs.

The Golden Tigers were paced by Sydney Koon with 16 kills. Melissa Thornton and Ellen Lemos followed right behind, adding 15 kills each. Mekenna Cipres lead the way with 52 assists for the Gainesville, Ga. based club.

Riding a five-game winning streak, the Lady Flames will look to extend that streak at the end of the week when they will head south for three big SSAC matches in as many days.

Lee will be in to Montgomery, Ala., Thursday to battle Faulkner University (5-8, 1-5), before heading to New Orleans Friday evening to square off with Loyola (11-4, 3-4). Coach Andrea Hudson’s squad will be in Jackson, Miss., Saturday afternoon to tangle with Bellhaven (14-3, 6-1).
