In addition to several section quizzes and chapter annotations, students have created Hunger Games propaganda commercials and will be participating in their own Hunger Games field day.
Most recently, the class had a Hunger Games food day. Students planned their ideas as districts and brought food to share. Each food item had to represent something that was made or would be eaten in their specific district.
The students were very creative — cocktail shrimp and Goldfish crackers for the fishing district, donuts to represent the district which creates grain and wheat, breakfast foods such as bacon to represent the farming district and steak bites for the wealthy district.
All 12 districts and the Capitol were represented. Students also could bring a food that was used directly in the book, like unleavened biscuits and fruit.
The Hunger Games unit will culminate with a viewing of the film. Students will then write a full-length compare and contrast essay detailing the similarities and differences (and effects of such) between the movie and book.
