Harry Lee McDaris, 81, a resident of Huntsville, Ala., and formerly of Cleveland died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, in a Huntsville health care facility.

He was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, where he served as an usher.

He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School, class of 1949. He attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Technological University. He was a veteran of the U.S Navy, serving in Norfolk, Va. He was employed for many years by NASA and worked in the space program with Wernher Von Braun at Red Stone Arsenal.

He was the son of the late Cecil and Eula Goforth McDaris. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin McDaris.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie McDaris; son, Dr. Lee McDaris and wife Claudia; stepdaughter, Sonya Jackson; grandchildren: Conner McDaris, and Abby and Gabe Jackson, all of Huntsville; sisters and their husbands: Betty and Haskel Morrow and Jeri and Jim Ervin, all of Cleveland; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, in the chapel of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
