James “Jim” Gale Lawson, M.D., 73, of Phoenix, Ariz., died at his residence on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.

He was born in Cleveland, on July 4, 1938.

He served in the United States Air Force and spent 13 months in South Vietnam as a general surgeon. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1967.

He and his family moved to Luke A.F. Base in Glendale, Ariz., upon his return from South Vietnam.

He was a solo practitioner of general surgery in Phoenix for 35 years and retired in 2005.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joy; daughter, Shawn Lawson of Phoenix; sons: Kevin Lawson and his partner, Gary Burnett, Portland, Ore., and Shannon Lawson and his wife, Emily, of Phoenix; two grandsons: Luke Fintan Lawson and Keegan Brody Lawson, both of Phoenix; and brother, Clyde L. Lawson and his wife, Ruth, of Knoxville.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at First Christian Church, 3925 North Ocoee St., Cleveland, TN 37312.
