People for Care and Learning, Operation Compassion and Kimberly-Clark Corporation have partnered to donate 172,800 diapers to DiaperLove of Bradley County.
“We’re just very thankful that God has blessed these gentlemen (People for Care and Learning) that they could bless our community with these diapers because it is a great need in our community,” said Brenda Lawson, founder of the local chapter of DiaperLove.
The nonprofit, which is made possible through a partnership with The Caring Place, provides diapers to mothers in need. Food stamps and WIC do not provide money for diapers.
Bill George and Dr. Fred Garmon of People for Care and Learning heard of the organization’s need for donations at a Rotary Club of Cleveland meeting. After the meeting, Garmon contacted Operation Compassion, another local nonprofit, about the possibility of partnering for a donation. Operation Compassion had just received a large donation of Huggies from Kimberly-Clark.
People for Care and Learning gave Operation Compassion $3,500 for 172,800 diapers. The donation is estimated to be more than a $70,000 value.
“Brenda said that will last her about six months,” Garmon said while giving an update to a group of Rotarians.
Half of the donation was delivered last week and is being stored in Lawson’s empty office space until needed. The rest of the donation is being stored by Operation Compassion and will be delivered as needed.
DiaperLove has also partnered with businesses and schools in the area for diaper drives. Donations were recently collected at the Bradley Central vs. Cleveland football game and the Walker Valley vs. Ooltewah football game.
“It’s a contest between the three local high schools and we have a traveling trophy we will give to the high school that gathers the most diapers,” Lawson said.
Donations can also be brought to Cooke’s Food Store and the Bank of Cleveland.
DiaperLove was started a year ago when Lawson saw a need in the community for such an organization.
According to The Caring Place website, “Clients who are approved at The Caring Place can receive 60 diapers per month for up to one year. Up to two children per family can receive diapers from this program.”
