The Lake Forest Middle School Bruins started the basketball season Thursday with a pair of wins over the visiting Athens Middle School Cougars. The seventh-graders posted a 37-26 victory, while the eighth grade prevailed by a 39-22 margin.
Following a sluggish first period, the seventh-grade Bruins outscored the Cougars 12-2 in the second quarter to take control of the game. Nicholas Bentley paced the Bruins’ attack by scoring 14 points, including 10 in the third period as the Bruins extended their lead to 32-17. Lemaric Tucker added eight points. Brock Gibson and Bailey Timmons controlled the glass, pulling down nine and six rebounds respectively.
“I was proud of our defensive intensity, especially for the first game, but we have several areas we must improve on,” said coach Cyle Herron.
The eighth-graders unwound a knotted first period taking control in the second to pull away and outscore the Cougars 23-11.
Ty Beavers led the Bruins with 12 points, with John Brown and Trevor Cartwright adding nine points apiece. Jake Tolleson pulled down five rebounds, while Brown had five steals to pace the defensive effort.
“It's always good to open the season with a win, but we have to work on our rebounding. We gave up way too many second and third shots,” said coach Andrew Nipper.
The Bruins travel across the river this evening to visit Rhea Central for a doubleheader with the Yellowjackets.
