Without a quorum at Keep America Beautiful’s September meeting, the officers for the new year couldn't officially be installed until last week at KAB’s October meeting.

The new officers for the coming year are Shari Horton, president; Shane Lawson, vice president; Diane Neely, treasurer; and Jennifer Norton, secretary.

The November KAB meeting — scheduled for Nov. 28 — will be the last meeting of the organization in 2012. Board members decided not to hold a meeting in December.

In other business:

— Cleveland Utilities was named as KAB's Business of the Year.

— Sunrise Rotary donated $750 to KAB.

— Jim Davis, KAB's past president, is in charge of what is believed to be a Western Flyer, possibly vintage 1950s, bicycle with almost brand-new tires to add to the current $1,120 total of KAB's first yard sale roughly two months ago.

— The local Coca-Cola plant earned the Business Beautification Award for October; Chick-fil-A will receive it for November; the Hiwasse Mental Health organization will get it for December.

— The American Recycles Challenge will continue until Nov. 8, giving prizes to area schools for the most recycling collected. The first-prize winner will earn a pizza party; the second an ice cream party; the third a cupcake party. In addition, the pre-K through third grades will get the chance to plant basil; the fourth- and fifth-graders can compete in creating Trash Art either as a sun catcher, a wind chime or a decorative planter using recycled items; the middle schools will compete by creating rain barrels; and high school students will compete by writing essays about recycling topics.

— Future fundraisers include another pancake breakfast, which KAB has held in previous years.

— KAB is still looking for both grants, as well as volunteers for various projects.
