The 2012 PurpleStride 5K Chattanooga road race will be taking place Saturday to raise awareness and funds for Pancreatic Cancer research.

“It is really to increase awareness about the cancer and the organization,” said Teresa Warren, a member of Chattanooga’s Pancreatic Cancer Action Network organization.

According to Warren, more than 700 participants came out for last year’s 5K. Some 900 participants are expected to turn out for Saturday’s run. This will be the fourth annual PurpleStride event.

Individuals who wish to participate in the race may do so by registering in person on Saturday. Registration will be $35 for a timed adult and $30 for untimed adults. Youth who wish to be a part of the one-mile fun run can register for $10 on Saturday. All survivors and volunteers are free.

“We have outgrown Coolidge [Park]. There are too many people showing up to do that,” Warren said. “We have a company that comes out who helps guide us through the route. We want this to be great for avid runners and people who are doing this for fun.”

Warren said there are teams for the event, as well. She and her family put together one each year in her husband’s honor and memory.

“This cancer is the fourth-leading cancer killer. It is predicted to be the second cancer killer by 2020, possibly even 2015,” Warren said. “It has a 6 percent five-year survival rate. We know 74 percent of people diagnosed will die the first year.”

The 5K is geared toward both serious runners and families. According to Warren, there will be music, children’s activities, refreshments, and information on the cancer. Participants are expected to come from as close as Cleveland and as far away as Alabama.

Registration will open at 8 a.m and the opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. Events will begin with the 5K at 9:30 a.m., followed by the one-mile fun-run at 9:45 p.m. More information on the 5K can be found at www.purplestride.org/chattanooga.
