Dr. Evaline Echols, professor of business at Lee University, presented a paper at the 77th annual International Con-vention of the Association for Business Communic-ations in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The theme for the conference was “Communica-ting Sustainability in Business.”

ABC is an international interdisciplinary organization committed to advancing business communication research, education,- and practice. This year’s conference included participants from 20 countries.

Echols’ paper, “Tearing Down Walls and Building Bridges Through Storytelling in the Communications Classroom,” reflects research and results of surveys administered to business communication students in regard to storytelling. Echols asserts storytelling serves several purposes in the classroom, such as overcoming anxiety of public speaking, building rapport between students and professors, and learning to think quickly.

“This conference emphasized how to communicate effectively in an increasingly complex and interconnected global environment and included world-renowned speakers and panelists,” said Echols.

Echols has been a professor of business for 28 years, serving as chairperson of the Department of Business from 1984-2004.
