“Doug has given a vast amount of in-kind service to MainStreet Cleveland and downtown projects over the past several years. He volunteered countless hours on First Street Square project working closely with the architect, construction, and city. Other projects include the railroad underpass, portal sign on Inman street, way-finding, his work on the Historic Commission and Tree board, and other endeavors,” said Sharon Marr, executive director of MainStreet Cleveland.
Caywood is also a past president of MainStreet who served two terms and six years on the board of directors.
Joe Stamper of Stamper’s Furniture was recognized by MainStreet Cleveland for the store’s 90 years of business in the downtown Cleveland Area.
The store has had three generations of “commitment to excellence” in the furnishings business and downtown Cleveland.
Stamper’s began business on Highway 411 in 1923. According to the company history, Clarke Stamper returned home from military duty in 1943 and established the Cleveland store.
In 1974, Joe Stamper stepped into the role of his father and grandfather Joseph O. Stamper, and became the person to keep the legacy of the family’s home furnishings business going. Joe Stamper was also joined by his brother Phil in operations until Phil’s death.
“We all have seen many retail establishments come and go over the years, especially in the downtown area,” Marr said. “We possibly could all learn a lesson from Stamper’s Furniture and its commitment. Commitment to brand, commitment to customers, commitment to downtown and commitment to our great city.
“To celebrate an anniversary of this magnitude is a very rare occasion. It is with pride and great admiration I congratulate Stamper’s Furniture on 90 years of business,” Marr said.
