Alvin Goodwin, 70, passed away fighting his battle with cancer in a local hospital, Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2012.

He was the only son of the late Luther Goodwin, longstanding former police chief of Cleveland.

Alvin, known by many as "Big Al" or "Goody," was a retired general contractor and former president of the Cleveland/Bradley Builders Association. He spent many mornings making coffee and hanging out with his buddies at Cleveland Plywood. He was a larger-than-life personality who dearly loved his family and friends yet also walked quietly in his Christian faith.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren fishing, doing other outdoor activities or just swinging on the front porch and was always there to help his cherished daughters. His wife of almost 50 years was the love of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Goodwin and Lorine Goodwin Hindmon.

He is survived by his wife, Reta Johnson Goodwin; two daughters and their spouses: Laura Goodwin Montez and her husband, Marcos, and Susan Goodwin Hinkle and her husband, Jonathan; and three grandchildren, whom he adored: Josh Montez and Ben and Sarah Hinkle all of Cleveland.

A Remembrance of Life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Jim Rush Funeral Homes, North Ocoee Chapel with Pastor Steve Smartt officiating. A eulogy will be given by Wes Snyder and scripture reading by his grandson Josh Montez.

Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Wes Snyder, Lewis Massey, Ed Martin, Johnny Pickett, Herbert Beene, Marcos Montez and Jonathan Hinkle serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Graham, Rex Dodson and Tony Massey.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
