Matt Ryerson, United Way of Bradley County president and CEO, was recently elected to serve on the United Ways of Tennessee board of directors.

The appointment was made at the UWTN Board meeting held in Franklin. The United Ways of Tennessee is comprised of 38 United Ways across the state.

“This is an honor to be asked to serve on this state board of directors,” Ryerson said. “While I am personally humbled by this, I accepted the position because I know that it reflects not on me, but on the great work being done by our United Way here in Bradley County.”

Ryerson became president and CEO of United Way of Bradley County in January, following the retirement of longtime leader Brenda Abel. He has a long history of working within the nonprofit field, serving with the YMCA of Metro Chattanooga and with the Safe Schools Health Students Initiative in Bradley County.

He began his work with United Way of Bradley County helping administer the Bradley Memorial Health Endowment Fund, and became a full-time employee of United Way of Bradley County in 2009, serving as vice president of Community Investment Strategies.

“We are pleased to have Matt joining the state association’s board of directors,” said Mary Graham, president of United Ways of Tennessee. “It is important to have board members like Matt who have such a strong commitment to outcomes and true community impact.”

She added, “The work United Way of Bradley County has done in long-term recovery from the devastating storms back in April 2011 is an excellent example. Those efforts are a replicable model for United Ways throughout Tennessee as we respond to future natural disasters across the state.”

Ryerson’s joining the UWTN board was just one of several organizational changes. Lester Lattany, president and CEO of United Way of Washington County (Johnson City), was elected as board chair for 2013, replacing Bryce Haugsdahl from United Way of the Mid-South (Memphis), who had served in that position from 2010 to this year. Haugsdahl will continue to serve on the board as immediate past chair.

Dawn Holley, executive director of United Way of Bedford County (Shelbyville), was elected as board chair-elect. Eddie Lee Herndon, president and CEO of United Way of West Tennessee (Jackson), was elected to serve as chair of Governance and Nominations. Jimmy Stone from the Oak Ridge National Lab was elected to serve as an at-large executive committee member, and Pat Murphy, plant manager for General Mills in Murfreesboro, was elected as a new board member.

Other board members continuing their terms include: Gary Bowman, treasurer, United Way of Greater Chattanooga; Judy Fenton, secretary, United Way of Loudon County; Penny Aviotti, First Tennessee Foundation; Eric Dewey, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville; Eva Dillard, United Way of Greater Chattanooga; Commissioner Raquel Hatter, Tennessee Department of Human Services; Ben Landers, United Way of Greater Knoxville; CeeGee McCord, Eastman Chemical Company; and Linda O’Neal, Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth.
