The holiday hardwood season is upon us with Polk County already having played a couple of pre-Christmas tournament games, while Walker Valley gets into the “spirit” today.

The Wildkittens got the ball rolling with a 50-40 victory over Coahulla Creek (Ga.) Tuesday in the Mistletoe Madness Tournament at the new North Murray High School in Chatsworth, Ga.

The Wildcats continued the good play Tuesday night with a 16-point victory over Sonoraville, Ga., setting up both Polk squads’ return to play this evening. The Wildcats will take on Gilmer County (Ga.) at 5:30, followed by the Wildkittens facing the host North Murray ladies at 7.

Both Benton squads will be back in action on Saturday with the opponents and times to be determined by tonight and tomorrow’s results.

The Walker Valley hoops squads are heading in different directions this weekend.

The Lady Mustangs are going west for the third annual Sun Drop Romp, facing Murfreesboro Magnet Central this afternoon at 2:30 at Morrison Elementary School, which is between McMinnville and Manchester. If coach Jessica Stone’s fillies win this afternoon they will be back in action at 7 this evening on the same court, facing Cookeville.

The Sun Drop Romp will continue Friday and Saturday with game times and opponents dependent upon game results.

Meanwhile the Mustangs will be riding south to Trenton, Ga., for the Dade County Christmas Tournament Friday and Saturday. Coach Bob Williams’ herd will race the host Dade County squad at 8:30 Friday evening before turning around to play Ridgeland (Ga.) Saturday at 5:30.

Bradley Central has a big District 5-AAA doubleheader Friday evening at Jim Smiddy Arena as McMinn County comes calling, before Bear squads split up for tournament action after Christmas.

The unbeaten Bearettes will be tested at the tough Upward Classic in Spartanburg, S.C., Dec. 27-29, while the Bradley boys are returning to the tough Maryville Christmas tourney beginning Wednesday.

The Cleveland High hoops squads will also be heading to different tournaments Dec. 27-29 with the Lady Raiders going to Chattanooga for the Best of Preps event next week, while the Blue Raiders will play in the Bearden Super 16 in Knoxville.

Polk County will once again head to Towns County, Ga., for the Battle of the States at the end of next week as well.

The Walker Valley and Cleveland wrestling teams will also hit the mat this weekend in Chattanooga area tournaments. The ninth-ranked Mustangs are going for the Hixson Duals title, while the No. 2 Blue Raiders will head to the McCallie Invitational.
