He was the son of the late Earl and Emma Meeks. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Meeks.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Vietnam and receiving the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
He retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services as a case manager with more than 10 years of service. He was a member of Mountain Creek Church of Christ in Chattanooga.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Meeks; one son, Steven Meeks and his wife, Betsy, of North Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Melissa Behrans of Chicago; stepdaughters: Anna Scoggins of LaFayette, Ga., Laura Wilson of Chattanooga, Erin Cole of Cleveland, and Suzanne Burke of Daytona Beach Fla.; stepsons: Daniel Hurst and Glenn Hurst, both of Chattanooga; several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; one brother, Richard Meeks of North Charleston, S.C.; two sisters: Norma Thomas and Debbie Altman, both of North Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance of life graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors, and the Rev. Gene Dasher will officiate.
