“The Winter of Our Destiny,” the story of three young men who travel together and find themselves caught up in the adventure of a “spooky, scary love story,” could have been titled “Food City,” Anderson said.
Anderson and his family lived in Cleveland but owned a trailer in Kodak that he and his family would sometimes visit on the weekends because of the location being close to Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
One night, he said he had a vivid dream about three men in a white van who drove up to a Food City grocery store near there. Anderson said that, a week later, a sign was posted saying that a Food City store was going to be built nearby. That sparked the idea for a fiction novel in which Food City played a part in the plot. He said it was too “vivid” to ignore.
“It’s about three guys who are on a trip together,” Anderson said. “It’s like any other mystery at first.”
But he also said that the promise of a good road trip leads the characters through a turn of events taking them on a journey that is full of danger and romance alike, with “mysterious” things happening throughout.
The story is set in a fictional town called Dry Fork, Tenn., which was named after a real-life town called Dry Fork, Va., that is not far from Anderson’s hometown of Danville.
While he said he is a Christian and has offered the book for sale through a Christian bookstore, Anderson said he does not consider “The Winter of Our Destiny” to be an explicitly Christian book.
“I’m a Christian. It’s got some spiritual connotations,” Anderson said. “It doesn’t preach at you, though.”
He explained that some of the danger the characters find themselves in over the course of the book is the direct result of past actions such as stealing, adding that all their actions dictate what happens later on in the story.
The book title Anderson ultimately decided to use, “The Winter of Our Destiny,” takes on a double meaning because “Winter” means waiting for the promise of spring and new beginnings, and “Destiny” is the name of a woman who plays a prominent part in the story, he said.
Anderson is the owner of The Anderson Group, a local company that sells insurance policies and investment plans and was started in 1982. He and his wife, Margaret, live in Cleveland, and they have five children and seven grandchildren. He has also taken on other creative endeavors such as movie acting and radio show hosting.
Because of needing to balance writing with his job, family life and other responsibilities, he said it took him three years to write the book. However, he said one of his sons motivated him to finish the book because the son kept saying he wanted to know how the story would end.
He finished the book in April of 2011, and it was published in June of the same year. Anderson said the book has already gone through two printings and that he is making note of possible revisions to be made to the book in the event of a third printing.
