Retired U.S. Navy DTC Charles Fred Johnson Jr., 82, of Kissimmee, Fla., passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at a health care facility in Chattanooga.

He was the son of the late Charles and Anna Johnson and a resident of Kissimmee for 37 years.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a dental tech chief. After retiring from the service, he spent 20 years working at the VA hospital in Orlando, Fla.

He served in Pearl Harbor as well as Vietnam, where he was awarded the Service Medal and Navy Achievement Medal with combat “V.” He was also awarded the RVN Campaign Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Johnson; and stepson, Harvey Gehrls.

He is survived by Harvey’s children: Cindy Moss of Cleveland and Charles Gehrls of Kissimmee; three stepgrandchildren: Frank Rausch of Kenosha, Wis., Sheila Nelson of Cleveland, and Edward Martinez of Farmington, N.M.; and several other extended family members and friends.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
