Lee University athletics director Larry Carpenter has named Caleb Morgan interim coach for the Flames’ cross country and track teams.

Morgan takes over for Don Jayroe, who recently resigned his position as head coach. Jayrow took over the cross country programs in 2007 after retiring from a career in education. He was instrumental in the formation of the track program and helped develop several All-Americans.

Morgan was in the midst of his first season as the assistant cross country and track coach when Jayroe submitted his resignation. He enjoyed a tremendous career as a Flames runner and graduated from Lee in the spring of 2011.

While at Lee he became the first male to ever qualify and compete in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Nationals. He also served as team captain for all four years and was a three-time outdoor track national qualifier.

Morgan holds the school record for the indoor mile (4:17.1), the outdoor 1,500m (3.59.03) and the outdoor 800m (1:55.4). His other running achievements include 2012 Tennessee State Half-Marathon Champion (1:14.09) and the 2011 Georgia 10 miler State Champion (53:48).

He is a native of Cleveland and attended Walker Valley High School. He is married to former Lee University runner Kristin Cretton.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me, and I want to thank everyone at Lee for this chance,” said Morgan. “We have a tremendous team, and we are all excited about competing in the upcoming season. I am looking forward to continuing this team's dedication to success from the other side of the fence as a coach.”

Carpenter commented, “I appreciate the dedication and hard work that coach Jayroe put into our running program. He brought our teams to a highly competitive level, taking some of them to the NAIA National Meet. We wish him the best as he moves forward. Caleb is a former member of our cross country team and worked as an assistant this year. He has gained the respect of the runners and will do a good job as the interim coach.”
