Cleveland Police Depart-ment lost a canine officer after emergency surgery was performed to save his life.
“Rico,” a three-year member of CPD, died Jan. 5, according to officer Evie West, spokesman for the CPD.
Rico was handled by officer Cody Hinson of the Cleveland Police Department Special Investigations Unit.
Among his duties were sniffing out illegal narcotics and performing community relations tasks such as visiting area schools.
“Rico had a Facebook page where students could go and join to keep up with his work,” West said.
Rico underwent surgery for a digestive system issue.
Rico and Hinson also aided in recent tornado searches.
West said a small memorial has been set up inside the Cleveland Police Depart-ment.
