A Jan. 29 court date was set for Ricky Dean Smith, 22, who was charged last week with aggravated child abuse.

An investigation began around the New Year’s holidays, resulting in Smith’s arrest just a few days later on Jan. 4, according to reports.

The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services alerted Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division detectives of a possible child abuse situation after injuries to a 5-week old baby were reported by a Chattanooga hospital.

Smith’s son had been taken to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital, according to investigator’s reports provided by Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for BCSO. The child had suffered serious injuries “while the infant was allegedly being cared for by his father.”

n A Sunset Trial resident reported his car had been broken into and items were taken.

Gilbert Geren told deputy Doug Graham of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office he had been awakened Tuesday morning after his car alarm activated.

When he went to investigate, Geren discovered someone had gained entry to two of his vehicles.

A wallet containing bank cards was missing.

Hunting and fishing equipment was also reported missing, along with binoculars.

The missing items were valued at more than $2,000.

n A 1991 Nissan was reported stolen from a Broomfield Road residence.

Tim Donahoo said the theft occurred Monday.

The car was reportedly “a fixer-upper” and had been parked in a field owned by Donahoo.

The vehicle was valued at $1,000.
