SODDY-DAISY — The new year continues to be a good one for the Bradley Central basketball teams as the Bearettes and Bears have both notched six straight victories since the calender flipped Friday night with District 5-AAA victories in Soddy-Daisy.

The fourth-ranked Bearettes opened the varsity doubleheader with a 62-35 victory before the Bears capped the evening by breaking up a close game early for a 66-43 win.

Coach Jason Reuter’s Bearette squad went south of Atlanta Saturday evening for the Starr’s Mills Girls’ Night Out and faced five-time Georgia state champion Wesleyan (See related story, this section).

Both Bradley teams will be back home Tuesday evening to welcome Baylor for its annual trip to Jim Smiddy Arena before entertaining Ooltewah Friday in a big district matchup.

The Bearettes (17-1, 7-0 District 5-AAA) came out of the gate strong Friday with an 18-7 opening period run and then tacked on another half dozen points to the lead by intermission.

Despite the starters getting limited playing time in the second half, Bradley posted its highest point total of the night in the third frame with a 21-12 scoring advantage before closing out the 27-point victory.

Junior Brooke Copeland led the way for Bradley with 16 points and a half dozen rebounds in the victory, while her fellow 6-foot-2 “Twin Tower” teammate Rebecca Reuter helped out with nine points, three caroms and a block.

Senior Brandi Whitted and junior Whitney Donaldson both dished out four assists for the victors, while netting 11 and 10 points respectively.

As a team, the Bearettes handed out 20 assists on 22 made field goals, sinking 17-of-38 shots from in front of the arc and 5-for-19 from beyond it, plus connected on 13-of-18 free throws.

Brooke Hale drilled a trio of 3-pointers on her way to 15 points but was the only Lady Trojan to reach double figures.

Although Soddy-Daisy (8-9, 0-7) won the rebounding battle by a 34-28 margin, the hosts made just 9-of-30 two-pointers and were 3-of-9 from distance, plus netted only 8-of-19 charity tosses.

After Bradley (11-8, 6-2) put a 60-point whipping on them when the teams first met this season, Soddy-Daisy (7-10. 1-6) matched the Bears point-for-point in the first eight minutes Friday evening.

Breaking open a 13-all game at the first buzzer, Bradley went on a 21-8 run in the second period, but then the Trojans played them within a point (15-14) in the third frame.

The Bears were able to put some more distance between them and their hosts in the final frame, outscoring them by a 17-8 margin for the 23-point win.

Seniors Bryce Copeland and Matt Whitmire paced the victors with 18 and 16 points respectively.

Copeland drained a pair of 3-pointers, plus dished out four assists, snagged four rebounds and copped a trio of steals on the night, while Whitmire sank 7-of-10 shots from the field, cleaned the glass for seven caroms and handed off three helps, plus blocked a shot.

Junior Logan Cox went 3-for-4 from “downtown” for nine points and he pulled down five boards in the victory. Junior Taylor Bentley netted five points, dished four assists and swiped a trio of thefts.

Senior Caleb Cain hit three of his four shots to add a half dozen to the Bear point total, plus he copped three steals and gave out a pair of helps. Sophomore Daniel Clark was perfect on a pair of two-pointers and a long-range bomb for seven points.

Bradley had a strong shooting night, hitting 63 percent (19-of-30) from the two-point area and 37 percent (7-for-19) from distance.

As in the girls’ game, the hosts won the rebounding battle (30-26), but struggled from the field hitting just 38 percent, including just 1-of-11 from beyond the 19-foot line.

James York and Andy Wright netted double figures for the hosts with 20 and 10 points respectively.
