He was born in Huntsville, Ala., to the late John G. and Reba Bailes Bird.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Robert Bird and Bishop Thomas L. Bird; and his youngest son, Michael, 61⁄2 years ago.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a young man. After 30 years with the city of Orlando, Fla., he retired from the engineering department and settled in Cleveland.
He was known for his witticisms, quick smile, warm heart, and generosity of spirit. He made many new friends when he moved to Cleveland five years ago.
He is survived by his son, Ocoee Fire Lt. Vincent Byrd and his wife, Jamie; daughter-in-law, Rae; grandchildren: Joshua, Jordan, grandson-in-law Jason, Jacob, Jagger, and Cole, as well as his great-grandson, Jackson. He was from a large family and was loved and cherished by many nephews and nieces, as well as his siblings. His surviving siblings include Mildred Benefield of Cleveland, Martha Webster of Harrisonburg, Va., Bishop B. Gene and Norma Bird of Atlanta, Wayne and Colleen Bird of Cleveland, The Rev. Donald Bird of Cleveland, the Rev. Douglas and Rochelle Bird of Cleveland, and Paulette and Stan Brock of Mount Dora, Fla.
Dr. Oliver McMahan and the Rev. Douglas Bird of Cross Pointe Church of God will lead a memorial service to be announced later this week.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cross Pointe Food Ministries of Cross Pointe Church of God, 956 6th St. N.E, Cleveland TN 37311.
