The Cleveland Middle School Lady Raiders eighth-grade basketball team hosted the Area 4-AAA TSSMAA Regional tournament and won it for the third straight year.

The Lady Raiders, the first seed with a 17-1 record, received a first-round bye, then faced off against Athens Junior High in the semifinals. Sofia Stomatiatus scored 15 points to lead all scorers, and the Lady Raiders got an easy 51-14 win. Brooke McCurdy and Gabria Hubbard added seven points each to lead in scoring for CMS.

In the final round the Lady Raiders squared off against Cherokee Middle from Kingston. Having not lost a home game this season, the Lady Raiders defended their court and won the Region Championship 54-20.

An 18-point first quarter and a 23-point second quarter put the game out of reach quickly, as all CMS Lady Raiders played the second half. Stomatiatus was nothing but money shooting over 55 percent from the floor to score a season-high 24 points. Gabria Hubbard and Brooke McCurdy contributed six assists to her efforts. Hubbard also scored 11 points, snatched five steals, and had five rebounds. McCurdy scored five points and had three steals. Kailey McRee grabbed eight boards, four steals and knocked in four points.

“It was so good to see hard work pay off for these girls. Sofia stepped up and played a great offensive and defensive game, and Gabria demonstrated her floor leadership skills at the point guard position, running the offense almost perfect,” CMS coach Kellie Fulton commented. “Tonight, the team earned their win by sheer effort and determination. I couldn’t be more proud of and happy for them.”

The 19-1 Lady Raiders now advance to the Elite 8 of the East Tennessee TSSMAA Sectional as Area 4-AAA’s No. 1 seed. They will play at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Sevierville Middle School.
