Bradley County wrestling fans can look forward to continued success in the future as 10 wrestlers from Bradley Central and Walker Valley earned title trophies earlier this week at the Area Junior Varsity Championships in Athens.
Seven Bears brought home the top trophy, while a trio of Mustangs did the same, while a total of 17 earned medals.
“We entered 11 wrestlers in nine different weight classes. At the end of the day, we won seven of those nine weight classes. In two different weight classes, we had both the champion and runner-up,” related Bradley head coach Ben Smith.
Claiming their weight division titles were Cole “Shogun” Flowers (113), Hunter Peter Parker (126), Donnie Beyer (132), Stephen Scott (138), Chris Sliger (145), Spencer Daily (160) and DJ Adams (285).
Earning second place were Taylor Mantooth (113), Brett Brown (152) and Corey Bandy (160) plus teammate TyShawn Chapman earned third place at 170.
“All in all, we had a very strong performance,” stated coach Smith. “Of the 11 wrestlers that placed, nine are underclassmen and will be returning for the Bears, so the future looks very bright. However, ‘Shogun’ (Flowers) and Corey (Bandy) are seniors that will dearly be missed and have been a joy to coach. They have been the epitome of Bradley Wrestling.”
From the north end of the county, Qy're Brown (152), John Hayes (170) and Ric Kennett (182) captured championships for Walker Valley.
Also placing for the Mustangs were Eli Earls, who took second at 120, Arrie Bramlett, third at 126, and Jordan Caylor, fourth at 106.
The event held at McMinn County High School was composed of the top four place winners from the Region 3 and Region 4 tournaments, including other schools such as Cleveland High, McCallie, Baylor, Soddy-Daisy, Hixson and others. No results from Cleveland were reported to the Banner.
