The Squires-Wyrick MyMathLab Series is based on lessons learned at the two colleges on ways to improve student learning and success in mathematics.
“We started the Developmental Math redesign in the spring of 2008 and as our program gained national recognition; we talked with Pearson about developing a new approach for how students learn math,” stated Wyrick.
“This whole thing was John’s idea, and he asked if I wanted to help him. We were talking about doing the videos, the homework, the quizzes — everything online, but we wanted to break it down into individual topics where a faculty member could put this course together in one afternoon and not two months because that is typically how long it takes.”
Squires said, “The series really comes out of our experience in the math emporium and blended learning, which is a combination of online instruction and on-ground assistance,,,in no sense is this a traditional textbook. The material is organized into bite-size topics that students can learn in a fairly short period of time. Instead of being built around chapters, the material is put together in terms of weekly assignments, which we call Mini-Modules.”
According to Wyrick, both she and Squires began talking with Pearson in the spring of 2009, and the rest is history.
They recently finished their sixth course; five are currently on the market, and the sixth one will be released this May. In addition to being available in college bookstores, the series is also marketed through some of the nation’s largest retail companies, including Wal-Mart and Amazon.
“We were really excited to hear of our award because a lot of work went into this and there are hundreds of great Pearson products out there,” stated Wyrick.
“We have been very fortunate; it takes most authors several years to write a book, and by working with Pearson , we have been able to write six books in less than three years.”
Dr. Carl Hite, Cleveland State Community College president, said, “It is great to know that faculty teaching at community colleges can produce quality work, and Pearson's Higher Ed Product of the Year is evidence of that. Karen and John represent the best in faculty who are making an impact on education, both in and outside the classroom.”
The Squires-Wyrick MyMathLab series is being used around the nation in community colleges, four year colleges, and universities, including Chattanooga State and Cleveland State.
Squires said, “What has been very rewarding is the positive feedback we have received from faculty and students around the country at colleges using our series. Both Karen and I have been able to visit some of these schools, and the students like the new approach. Students who have previously struggled in math are now able to grasp the concepts. That is what it is all about.”
