He was retired from the Forest Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benson and Minnie Rymer Hammons; daughter, Linda Hammons; brothers: Frank Hammons and Wayne Hammons; and two infant sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Duckworth Hammons of Benton; children: Susan Jolley and husband, Marc, of Macon, Ga., Joe Hammons and wife, Bridgett, of Riceville, Benson Hammons and friend, Christine Phillips, of Polk County, Calvin Hammons and wife, Teresa, of Old Fort and Burch Hammons and wife, Heather, of Cumming, Ga.; stepchildren: Carolyn Flanigan of Chattanooga, Jeannie Cuervo and husband, Bryan, of McDonald and Gene Bagby of Cumming, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Abie Hammons of Benton.
A graveside service will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Campground Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Ross officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home.
