Edward F. Gates, 80, a resident of Cleveland, passed away peacefully, Saturday night, Feb. 16, 2013, surrounded by his family.

He was a lifelong resident of this area being born in Cleveland on Sept. 25, 1932, a son of the late Austin and Bertie Gates.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country during the Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he began his career as an Auto Body repairman which he continued until his retirement.

He was a member of the local AMVETS club, he loved the great outdoors especially deer hunting and fishing. He was commonly known to his CB friends as the “Junk Man.”.His love for his grandchildren ,however will be his most remembered quality.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Shirley Gates and Carol Evans; and three brothers: Bobby Gates, Ralph Gates and Bud Gates.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Carol White Gates; four daughters: Linda Mooneyhan (David), Ollie Hall (Donnie), Nancy Dawkins (Randy), and Victoria Gates; two sons: Eddie Gates and Randy McCracken: two sisters: Floella Smith and Alma Sue Hammandtree; one brother, J.O. Gates; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous other extended family members and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the Southview Baptist Church, 553 13th Street S.E., Cleveland, with the Rev. Art Jones officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 5 until the 7 p.m. service time.
