He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in the Greasy Creek Community in Polk County and moved to Athens after retirement and many years of service with Wright Brothers Construction Co.
He received an honorable discharge from the National Guard.
He was preceded in death by sons: Robert Brian Hedden and Billy Darrell “Butch” Hedden; seven siblings; and his parents, Walter “Buck” Hedden and Carrie Hedden Wilcox.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nancy Jane Wilcox Hedden; daughters and their spouses: Debra Darlene and Rex Rymer of Waverly, Genean and Tommy Wright of Cleveland and Melanie and Gary Kirby of Athens; sisters and their spouses: Mary Ann Guest of Cleveland, Juanita Garrett, and Geneva and Robert Frank, all of Reliance and, Loranza and Ray Frank of Benton; brothers and their spouses: Frankie and Robbie Wilcox, Lloyd and Ruby Wilcox, Roy and Shirley Wilcox, all of Reliance and Melvin and Laura Mae Wilcox of Tellico Plains, Frankie Ray Hedden and wife, of Resaca, Ga. and Eddie Wilcox of Benton; grandchildren: Brian Rymer, Gene Rymer, Dan Rymer, Melissa Locke-Kaylor, Christopher Headrick, Brandy Payne, Johnny Wright, Kim Saylor, Steve Wright, Samantha Kirby, Shelby Kirby, Brian Simms and Heidi Chapple; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many friends.
Visitation was held at Clear Springs Baptist Church Sunday from 5-8 p.m.
The Rev. Kenneth Elkins officiated and Melissa Locke-Kaylor presented his eulogy.
Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.
He was interred at the Clear Springs Baptist Church cemetery after a 1 p.m. service today, Feb. 25, 2013, at the church.
Ziegler Funeral Home of Athens was in charge of arrangements.
