Cormetech donates $5,600 to CHS science classes

A significant charitable gift from Cormetech employees has resulted in enhanced student engagement in the biology, chemistry and physics classrooms of Cleveland High School.

The $5,600 gift was made available because of the commitment of the Cormetech employees to recycling.

Recycling is inherent to the manufacturing business of Cormetech and its employees are also committed to personally recycling with the company’s encouragement. As a result, the money obtained and saved is “recycled” into the community through charitable contributions.

Cormetech's Cleveland manufacturing plant was awarded the Tennessee Recycler of the Year in the business division for 2010.

Through the efforts of the Bradley/Cleveland Public Education Foundation, Cormetech plant manager Denise Rice learned of the need for the final piece of technology to make the science classes at Cleveland High School fully tech integrated.

Purchasing two sets of a Learner Response System, which coordinates with the high-tech computerized equipment in each classroom, has promoted full-class participation throughout lessons. This supports Cormetech’s commitment to quality science and math education.

The purchased devices, appropriately named ActivExpression 2, are designed to look like a smartphone so students will be able to use it without much instruction. It is an improvement on most student polling devices in that students can text in answers, questions they have, or opinions about the current topic of the classroom.

As a result, CHS science teachers Andi Wendorf and Alicia Lowe indicate they have observed an increase in student interaction and contribution to lessons, resulting in stimulating discussions and lively, insightful debates.

The two teachers also indicate they can more effectively manage their instruction because the feedback using the devices allows an instant gauge of student comprehension of the subject matter at hand. The ability to identify student achievement trends and proactively address a lack of understanding has reduced challenges before they become ongoing academic issues for their students. Self-paced learning and testing is also facilitated with the ActivExpression2 devices.

A dozen Cormetech employees visited the science classrooms to see the benefit of their gift and hear “thank you” from students and teachers first hand. They also participated in the class, registering their answers to quizzes designed by the teachers to both challenge and entertain their generous visitors.
