Game one was a good old fashioned pitchers’ duel. The Cougars’ Brandon Zajac and the Tigers’ Tyler McClure locked horns and took turns retiring the opposition with relative ease. The Tigers picked up the only run they would need in their first turn at the dish. A one-out walk to Jordan McDonald resulted in the only run of game one. McDonald stole second and scored on a single from Ryan Whitt.
The Cougars had runners on base in every inning, but were unable to get one all the way around. Cleveland State had a runner in scoring position in the first and sixth innings and the bases loaded with one out in the fourth. But each time the Tigers came up with the big defensive play and also turned a pair of double plays to squash a rally.
McClure went the distance scattering nine hits to get the win for the Tigers while Zajac also went all the way striking out nine and allowing only three hits.
Chattanooga State singled their way to a four run lead in the top of the first inning to start game two. McDonald, Casey Mannion, Aaron Wright, Brandon Bush and Austin Swayze all singled in the frame with Wright, Bush and Swayze getting and RBI each and Zach Lance contributed a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.
The visitors tacked on three more runs an inning later on a passed ball and a two-run triple from Wright to push the lead to 7-0. The Tigers put the game completely out of reach adding a field goal in the third and a safety in the fourth after McDonald air-mailed a three-run homer over the left field fence and Zach Lance doubled in two more for a 12-0 lead.
Tyler Troutt went the distance to toss the shutout for the Tigers and pick up the win allowing only two hits along the way. Thomas Huddleston suffered the loss for the Cougars while Tyler Kilgore, Derek Chandler, Jordan Whitmire and Hadyn Bailey all pitched in relief.
The Cougars will try to salvage the third game of the series today at 2 p.m.
